The chemical laboratory provides a wide range of geochemical analysis that supports mainly the needs of the SGS projects and other governmental and private sectors, using the most up-to-date analytical techniques, following international standards methods. Commonly, the major and trace element contents of rocks, minerals, sediments, and water are analyzed in this laboratory.

Crushers

The department maintains other necessary laboratory facilities, such as dry ovens for drying (Fig. 1) samples and jaw crushers for reducing sample sizes between 2 and 5 mm and splitting and pulverizing them up to 76 microns.

General Chemistry

The department also maintains weighing instruments and facilities for the preparation of samples using the different methods of sample digestion. In addition, carbon and sulfur analytical devices (Fig. 2) are also provided, which are used in the determination of sulfur and carbon contents in organic and inorganic samples.

X-ray Fluorescence

The X-ray fluorescence machine (Figs. 3 and 4) is used in the determination of the major oxide contents of rock and soil samples using two methods, the fusion and the press methods.

Induced Couple Plasma (ICP) machines

Trace and rare earth elements are analyzed in this laboratory along with the oxide analysis. The laboratory is equipped with the latest ICP analytical equipment (Figures 5 and 6). This precision unit measures the concentrations of rare earth elements and other trace elements in rock, mineral, and soil samples. It is also used in measuring the concentrations of trace elements in water samples.

Induced Coupled Plasma-Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (ICP-AAS)

One of the most important machines of the laboratory that is used in analyzing base metals and gold contents of rock samples in very low detection limits is the ICP-AAS.
