The exploration and evaluation of geothermal energy sources as a renewable energy source could be the first step in achieving the Kingdom's vision 2030. It supports the sustainable development program for the Saudi society by increasing the contribution of renewable energy sources to the energy mix. SGS studies discovered new evidence on the availability of geothermal energy sources in the Kingdom. These sources include the heat flux regions, volcanoes, hot springs, and radioactivity of uranium, thorium and potassium, which exist in high percentages in granites. As an initial stage, the study on the radioactivity in granites will be limited to assessment of their high radioactive contents as a potential source of energy for the generation of electrical power.
To prepare a detailed map, showing the domains of surface heat flux and thermal production in radioactive granites based on geological, radioactivity and geophysical data for their viability in exploiting geothermal energy for the generation of electrical power.
The various hydrogeological and hydrological studies of the SGS cover the major phases in water resource development from the exploration for water and the evaluation of the water quality and water sources to the development of abstraction strategies and storage plans. Hydrogeological studies are supported by eophysical studies in the identification of water reserves.
